May has one of my favourite wine days – International Chardonnay Day. You know I love a good Chardonnay, and so I’ll take any excuse to celebrate. So when I was sent the Scarborough 2019 Yellow Label Chardonnay to try, I was so excited. I visited their cellar door when I was in the Hunter Valley a few years ago and adored their wines. So to revisit them for Chardonnay Day got me so excited!
This wine seriously delivered and is the perfect way to celebrate. For lovers of Chardonnay that is oaked, this wine is for you!
Why I love the Scarborough 2019 Yellow Label Chardonnay
The Scarborough 2019 Yellow Label Chardonnay is the perfect wine for lovers of oaked Chardonnay with seriously good value. The grapes were fermented and matured in French oak with varying ages over 12 months giving it that classic buttery and creamy Chardonnay flavour. I am all here for it on International Chardonnay Day!
On the nose, notes of stone fruit and a hint of lime can through along with honey and toasted cashews. There is also a hint of vanilla from the oak influence. This followed through to the palate which had similar notes that are beautifully balanced with butterscotch and a lovely creamy texture. I love how complex this wine is. With each sip, I unpacked more flavours from it and it was the kind of wine I wanted to dive into.
The Scarborough 2019 Yellow Label Chardonnay may not be for those who only like unoaked Chardonnay, but it is a great wine for celebrating this fantastic grape. If you love an oaked Chardonnay this wine is perfect for those wanting a wine under $30 to enjoy on a weeknight or weekend.
It’s the kind of wine you could cozy up on the couch with or pair with a nice meal. I couldn’t go past classic roast chicken with this wine, but you could also pair it was a nice gooey cheese.
About Scarborough Wine Co
Scarborough was created from blood, sweat, tears and several glasses of Chardonnay, so it seems fitting to be enjoying their wine on the International Chardonnay Day. In the 60’s Ian ‘Scarbie’ Scarborough met Merralea in the Barossa Valley. Three years later they married and then moved to the Hunter Valley to make it their home. By the end of the 70’s they purchased the Gillards Road Property to start their own wine company.
They decided their vision for the future rested on Chardonnay and so got rid of all the Shiraz previously planted there. The first vintage was in 1987 and the small amount of wine was made in the garage of the house where the cellar door is today.
In the 90’s they released their most ubiquitous Chardonnay – the Yellow Label that this review is about! Word spread as Scarborough gained popularity and appeared in some of Sydney’s finest restaurants. Many still serve it today.
Fast forward to today where Scarborough Wine Co. is an established name amongst the finest in the Hunter Valley and a must-visit cellar door. They’ve expanded beyond Chardonnay to Pinot along with plenty of new varieties.
