Wine review: Robert Stein blü hen Riesling
If you’ve been following along, you might already know that for some reason I’m finding myself in my Riesling era. Why? I couldn’t tell you, but I am loving every second of this. So I was pretty excited to try the Robert Stein blü hen Riesling. This wine is unfiltered and has minimal intervention with a partial barrel ferment, so it’s slightly different from the Riesling I’ve been having lately. But I have to say it was really nice to try something a little different! This Riesling has a really interesting texture to unpack that makes it great for pairing with food.
On the nose, the Robert Stein blü hen Riesling has nice notes of pear and lemon, which follows through into the palate alongside a nice apple note. The palate is crunchy and has a really nice texture that has plenty that gives this wine plenty to pique your interest. Its saline and mineral notes balance out the fruit and the finish is refreshingly dry. This wine is complex and nicely balanced, delivering plenty of flavour and ticking all the boxes if you want to try something a little different.
About Robert Stein
In 1838 Johann Stein came to Australia from Germany carrying the first cuttings of Rhine Riesling to survive in Australia. Under his supervision, Camden Park Vineyard flourished as one of the earliest wineries in Australia. His brother went on to establish his own vineyard in Sydney’s South-West. In 1976 Robert and Lorna Stein revived their winemaking tradition with a vineyard in Mudgee, NSW.
Their family has continued to carry on the legacy throughout the years, and in 2009 their grandson Jacob Stein returned to the family business as chief winemaker. The family vineyard is now over 40 years old and sees ‘old vines’ produce exceptional quality fruit.
