Wine review: Robert Stein blü hen Barbera
If you’ve been following along for a while, you’ll know I am a sucker for a great label. Although I have to admit the label was what originally got me excited to try the Robert Stein blü hen Barbera, the wine itself is what really stuck out. I love a good Barbera for its drinkability, especially when you can chill it for warmer months, and this one seriously delivers. It’s part of the Robert Stein blü hen range which is winemaker Jacob Stein’s journey to produce innovative, vibrant, beautifully balanced new styles of Mudgee wines. This Barbera is absolutely delicious and would be right at home with a nice bowl of pasta or a pizza enjoyed with family and friends.
On the nose, the Robert Stein blü hen Barbera has notes of raspberry, cherry and spice. These notes are abundant in the juicy palate which has a light body despite the ABV. It’s easy drinking goodness with a great line of acidity and just the right amount of tannin to make it perfect for enjoying with food. This wine is simply delicious, and all too easy to polish off. Just add a nice pizza and you have the perfect evening!
About Robert Stein
In 1838 Johann Stein came to Australia from Germany carrying the first cuttings of Rhine Riesling to survive in Australia. Under his supervision, Camden Park Vineyard flourished as one of the earliest wineries in Australia. His brother went on to establish his own vineyard in Sydney’s South-West. In 1976 Robert and Lorna Stein revived their winemaking tradition with a vineyard in Mudgee, NSW.
Their family has continued to carry on the legacy throughout the years, and in 2009 their grandson Jacob Stein returned to the family business as chief winemaker. The family vineyard is now over 40 years old and sees ‘old vines’ produce exceptional quality fruit.
