Richard Hamilton ‘Ghost Hill’ Shiraz

Dark and intense, perfect for BBQ

by The Cheeky Vino

I love a good McLaren Vale Shiraz and was excited to try the Richard Hamilton ‘Ghost Hill’ Shiraz 2019 after sampling their Little Road Shiraz a month or so ago. I also absolutely loved their Grenache from this range, so was keen to try a classic.

Richard Hamilton Wines has a proud tradition in winemaking. It dates back to the establishment of South Australia’s first vineyard and winery in 1837. The owners Richard and Jette Hamilton are proud of this tradition. They are passionate about working with their winemaking team to continue producing premium quality wines.

The Hut Block is home to the finest Shiraz producing vineyards, and the 50-year-old vineyard ‘Ghost Hill’ is named to remember the Hamilton Family’s roots in Dover UK. The story goes that a young woman would meet the ghost of her lover at the foot of Ghost Hill But there’s nothing spooky about this wine!

In fact, the Richard Hamilton ‘Ghost Hill’ Shiraz is quite the opposite being full-bodied and packed full of intense flavour. Notes of boysenberry, cherry and raspberry along with white pepper dominate the aroma and palate. It is a rich Shiraz with toasty oak and notes of mocha and chocolate. Complex, brooding and seriously delicious with finely structured tannins. Each sip brought more complexity to unpack.

This wine was tasty, and I’d love to pop it away for a few years as I think it would really develop its flavours even more. At $38 a bottle for old vine wine, it’s a great one to grab now and squirrel away.

As with most Shiraz, enjoy the Richard Hamilton ‘Ghost Hill’ Shiraz with steak or braised meat. Those full-bodied flavours will really shine!
