You all know how much I love Sangiovese, and if you don’t, now you do! So when I received this Sangiovese from Vinomofo, I let out a little squeal of excitement. Sangiovese? Tick. From Pizzini, one of my favourites? Tick Tick. Under $20? Well, that just knocked it out of the park, and don’t even get me started on the label!

Sangiovese has to be up there as one of my favourite red wine grape varieties. I think that’s because it was one of the first types of wine I had that made me fall in love with wine. And which producer was the one with the wine I kept going back to? None other than Pizzini of course! My parents are a huge fan of their wines, and so they’ve always had a special place in my heart. So when I finally got to try this wine from their Vinomofo collaboration, I could hardly wait to get stuck in!

It’s a wine that you don’t need to think about opening, and that makes everyone feel at home.

Why I loved it

Oh gosh, did the Pizzini Gusto Mama Sangiovese 2019 deliver. This wine was so delicious, I wish I had another bottle to go through the experience of drinking it again! Where to begin? The best part about this wine was that it was full of flavour but surprisingly fresh. It’s acidic without ripping your tongue out and clean on the finish. It delivered everything you want from a Sangiovese but was so beautifully balanced that it was all too easy to drink.

Flavour-wise, I got ripe red cherry and strawberry along with subtle spice and dried herbs. It had the fresh fruit along with savoury notes that make Sangiovese such a great food wine. I loved that this wine was so balanced between these flavours, the body of the wine, the acidity and the subtle tannins. It made the wine so easy to sip on, and absolutely delicious. I kept going back for more – it wasn’t too heavy or too light. It was just right!

So who would love this wine? Well if you’re looking for a great food wine that isn’t too heavy, this wine is for you. If you want something affordable that you can crack open with family or friends and be in for tasty wine, this wine is for you. Looking for a balanced Sangiovese that isn’t too tannic? This wine is for you. This wine is sure to be a crowd-pleaser and at such a good price it’s hard to say no!

What to pair it with

The Pizzini Gusto Mama Sangiovese 2019 is definitely a food wine, even though it is medium-bodied. Its savoury and fruity notes make it the perfect pair for something delicious, especially when enjoyed with family and friends. My recommendation? Do what the Italians do, and pair this Sangiovese with Pizza and Pasta. There is no better classic match, and the Pizzini Gusto Mama Sangiovese 2019 is sure to shine next to these classics. I can’t think of anything much better than having a glass of this wine in one hand and a slice of pizza in the other!
