I couldn’t believe my luck when I came home from Tasmania to find some more Tasmanian sparkling waiting for me at home! It certainly lifted my spirits from my travel depression! The Pirie 2017 Vintage Sparkling wine from Tamar Ridge was truly incredible. I was blown away by how good the sparkling wine was in Tassie, and this wine is no exception! This is the latest release of Pirie and man oh man is it good! Tassie sparkling definitely rivals champagne without the price tag – what’s not to love?

Pirie is actually Australia’s most awarded non-vintage sparkling. However, when we visited the Tamar Ridge cellar door on our trip, Vintage was my favourite! It was so nice to get the chance to enjoy a bottle of this again after our trip. It took me back to the beautiful sweeping views at the Tamar Ridge Cellar Door. But for those who haven’t visited, this Vintage sparkling seriously delivers on flavour, with or without nostalgia!

About Pirie

Pirie Vintage Sparkling 2017

Pirie is one of Tasmania’s original producers of premium sparkling wine and embodies everything Tasmania has to offer. Their wines are made using the traditional method (the same method used for making Champagne – read more about this here) with grapes from the Tamar Valley in Northern Tasmania.

Pirie is the brother brand of Tamar Ridge who also produces premium wines in the Tamar Valley. They have a commitment to quality ensuring they only produce vintages when the best sparkling wine can be produced. Pirie wines are highly awarded including holding Australia’s most awarded non-vintage sparkling wine. So you know you are getting the best in the bottle!

What I loved about the Pirie Vintage Sparkling 2017

Pirie Vintage Sparkling 2017

The Pirie Vintage Sparkling 2017 is a crowd-pleasing vintage sparkling made using the traditional method and Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. If you haven’t tried Vintage Sparkling before, it does taste a little different to the usual Non-Vintage Sparkling (read more about the difference here). You can normally expect more toasty notes and creaminess from more time spent ageing in the bottle. Some prefer their wine a little crisper, but this wine delivers on both in a beautifully balanced drop!

The texture was what made it for me – crisp, refreshing and nice and dry. It delivered enough richness to balance out the crisp and refreshing notes that I really enjoyed it. The flavours were complex and beautiful to unpack with each sip. Those classic flavours of brioche and a hint of nuttiness were balanced out by lemon and peach. It was beautifully balanced between richness and being super refreshing. As a result, this Vintage sparkling is all too easy to enjoy and sure to go down very easily with friends!

What to enjoy it with

Pirie Vintage Sparkling 2017

The Pirie Vintage Sparkling 2017 is beautifully balanced and easily enjoyed with or without food. And at this price point, it’s the sort of wine that delivers Champagne flavours without the price tag. This makes it perfect for enjoying with friends but also enjoying along with any celebration. You don’t need much of an excuse to crack it open!

In terms of food pairings, you can’t get much better than pairing it with Tasmanian classics. This wine will go oh so well with fresh oysters or salmon. We seriously indulged in the seafood in Tasmania and I can’t think of any better pairing to this wine than some fresh oysters. But if you aren’t a fan (I wasn’t until our trip), you could also enjoy this wine with some beautiful cheese. Or just sip on it before dinner!

In summary: Pirie Vintage Sparkling 2017

The Pirie Vintage Sparkling 2017 is a beautifully balanced sparkling wine that delivers on flavour and has a price tag that makes it a no brainer! The flavours remind you of champagne but this bottle doesn’t break the bank. Richness is balanced out by crisp and refreshing notes that make this wine all too easy to drink. Perfect for enjoying with friends over some fresh seafood or simply to celebrate.
