Even with the weather heating up, there is always a place for red wine. Even though I can smash a cold wine or two, I still enjoy my reds at dinner! So I was delighted to get to try this Cabernet Sauvignon from Penley Estate. I haven’t tried their wines before, but they seriously nail it for prettiest packaging! And once I tried this wine, I was seriously in love. I am not usually the biggest Cabernet Sauvignon drinker, but this one really knocked my socks off and so I had to share it!
About Penley Estate
Penley Estate is located in Coonawarra with a wine-making history dating back to 1844, although it really began in a red sports car in 1945. Sound intriguing? This was when Reginald Lester Tolley met Judith Anne Penfold Hyland and sparks flew, bringing to life Penley as a business name. It was until 1988 that their children decided to create their own wines under Penley Estate and built a winery in 1995.
As the years went on Coonawarra wines fell out of fashion a little, and so they had to decide whether to continue on. Instead of selling, Ang and Bec Tolley decided to revitalise and refresh the wine to make it perfect for any occasion and for everyone to enjoy. Through their wines, they celebrate the fruit and honour the vine. With winemaker Kate Goodman on board, one of Australia’s best winemakers, you know you are in for a treat!
Why I loved the Penley Estate 2019 Tolmer Cabernet Sauvignon
The Penley Estate 2019 Tolmer was simply delicious. It looked quite dark in the glass, and I was thinking it might be a little too heavy for me. But it was actually more medium-bodied and seriously delicious. It was made to be a modern expression of Coonawarra cabernet – the grape the region is renowned for, and I think it did a great job of it. Flavours on the nose were blackcurrants and oak – think vanilla and chocolate. I also got a hint of tobacco.
What I loved so much about this wine was the flavour in the mouth. I found this wine to be super smooth and balanced between the juicy fruits and well-integrated tannins. The vanilla and chocolate really helped to balance out the fruitiness and added a nice complexity. The finish was round and bright, leaving me wanting sip after sip.
Overall this wine was a winner in my books. It truly blew me away how much I could enjoy a Cabernet Sauvignon, and it is drinking well now but will easily be delicious with a few years of cellaring.
What to enjoy it with
The Penley Estate 2019 Tolmer is best enjoyed with food, and dinner would be my pick given the heat! This wine would be perfect with braised or roasted beef, but would just as easily be enjoyed with a BBQ. Think summer steaks and sausages, with this wine being the true hero of the show! You could also chuck in some grilled lamb and vegetables if you want to take it up a notch.
In summary: Penley Estate 2019 Tolmer Cabernet Sauvignon
The Penley Estate 2019 Tolmer is a Cabernet Sauvignon that redefines how good they can be. This isn’t just any Cabernet, and it is sure to knock your socks off just like it has mine! Coming from someone who doesn’t normally gravitate to these wines, I absolutely adored this one. It was balanced, smooth and surprising. It would be at home at your next celebration and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
