As the weather has been heating up we’ve been drinking a lot more white wine. This is a new thing for me as I’m not normally as big a fan of white as red. But I’ve been jumping on board lately with so many incredible wines to discover. And this Fiano from Pawn Wine Co is one of those wines. I’ve been really enjoying Fiano lately (read the wine guide here) and this one certainly ticked all the boxes for me! And that is saying something from someone who isn’t normally all that into white wines.
I really love the story behind Pawn Wine Co and the labels are so eye-catching! Their Tempranillo I was sent recently was absolutely delicious, and so I was excited to try one of their white wines. It did not disappoint.
About Pawn Wine Co
The Pawn Wine Co started in 2002 and has a great story behind the name. Vignerons and winemakers Tom Keelan and wife Rebecca Willson had a parcel of fruit deemed not good enough by a larger wine company. They felt they had become mere Pawns in the global wine game, doomed to be played and moved around, and ultimately sacrificed.
So they rolled up their sleeves and set out to make small hand selected parcels of wine from alternative varieties grown in the Adelaide Hills and Langhorne Creek. The name comes from proving that these alternative varieties can make amazing wines as stand-alone varietals.
What I loved about the Pawn Wine Co Fiano 2020
The Pawn Wine Co Fiano 2020 is produced using grapes from Langhorne Creek. Fiano is a Southern Italian variety and so it suits the cooler maritime climate in this region.
I absolutely loved this wine. It has a medium body and beautiful complexity. Aromas of pear, orange blossom, honey and toasted hazelnuts all came together in the glass and I’ll be honest I just wanted to keep smelling it. However, the palate is where I really fell in love. This wine is rich with fruity flavours upfront of paw paw and citrus but this was followed by subtle spice and a hint of oak influence. The finish was mineral with salinity that rounded this wine out beautifully. It was crisp and refreshing yet deep and complex. From start to finish it was a delightful wine to enjoy.
What to enjoy it with
Fiano comes from the coast of Italy and so it has no better pairing than seafood. The saline, mineral finish in the Pawn Wine Co Fiano 2020 will make it a great match with seafood and shellfish dishes. If you aren’t a fan of seafood though, I think it would also go well with pasta thanks to that crisp acidity. It would really offset rich flavours in a cream sauce.
This wine is perfect for enjoying on a Saturday afternoon or with a long lunch. As the weather heats up this wine would make the perfect match to an early dinner, afternoon aperitivo or lunch with friends.
In summary: Pawn Wine Co Fiano 2020
The Pawn Wine Co Fiano 2020 is simply delicious. It is a complex white which really delivers on flavour. Fruity up front with a savoury and mineral finish, this wine keeps on giving. Whether you pair it with food or simply enjoy it of an afternoon, it is sure to transport you to Italy. Which is where I’d rather be right now!
