3-word description: Juicy, savoury, fine
The Pacha Mama Pinot Noir 2018 is going to go oh so well with your Spring and Summer dining. Its juicy flavours are followed by a hint of savoury and spice, along with a smooth finish and fine tannins. It is calling out to be paired with duck, or mushroom risotto.
I’m obviously in the mood for Pinot Noir at the moment, and I don’t care one bit! I could shout my love for Pinot Noir from the rooftop if I had to, and this wine would be no exception. It’s the perfect red wine variety for the weather getting warmer. I have always been a fan of red wine, but Summer is a killer for some of those heavier styles. Pinot Noir is a perfect choice all year round, but especially as the weather heats up. Who doesn’t love a good glass of Pinot Noir with dinner?
Now that the weather is heating up, Pinot Noir is a wine we keep grabbing out. So I was very excited to receive this sample of Pacha Mama Pinot Noir 2018 just in time! It was a great excuse to enjoy some more Pinot Noir. So I brought it along to my dad’s birthday dinner because if there is someone who loves Pinot more than me, it’s my dad. I have to say this wine got some definite nods of approval, so if dad loves it you know I’m not just saying it!
About Pacha Mama
Pacha Mama wines are named after the Incan earth goddess, aka Mother Nature, who brings fruit to the vine and joy to the world. Honestly, if she brings fruit to the vine she most certainly has my vote! Callie and her dad Dave were inspired to start their first wine brand when they were in Machu Picchu in 2009.
Pacha Mama wines focus on highlighting wine regions across Victoria, focusing on finding the best regions for the grapes. They have had the same group of growers for 7 years now and learning more each vintage about the reflection of regions and seasons in the grapes. Their winemaking uses minimal intervention to let the regions shine, and produce wines that are distinctive, refined and approachable.
Why I loved the Pacha Mama Pinot Noir 2018
The Pacha Mama Pinot Noir 2018 is simply a delicious Pinot Noir. The grapes are from the Yarra Valley which is renowned for its Pinot, and it is easy to see why with this wine. Lightly coloured in the glass, this wine smells of fresh strawberries and cherries with a hint of spice. There is also a slight savoury note to it which comes out in the flavour.
In the glass, you get a juicy front to this wine with that classic strawberry and cherry Pinot Noir flavours. But I loved that this wine had more to offer in its savoury notes. Think a hint of meatiness or mushroom that makes it a perfect food Pinot Noir. That and a hint of spice which really rounded out the palate. This wine is refined and complex, but still completely approachable with its juicy front. It’s smooth with fine tannin and a really nice structure. The sort of wine you could easily keep drinking to keep unpacking it.
What to pair it with
The Pacha Mama Pinot Noir 2018 is a great food wine. Because it is a little more savoury than other fruity Pinot, it would be even better when paired with a nice meal. Think something like mushroom risotto or some grilled lamb. This wine would also go perfectly with the classic Pinot Noir pairing: duck. The flavours would really lend themselves to a beautiful duck dish – so don’t be afraid to get a little fancy with this wine!
In summary
The Pacha Mama Pinot Noir 2018 is a great food wine and simply delicious. Although it isn’t the cheapest wine on the market, you are getting the quality of minimal intervention and careful winemaking which really shines through this wine. It is sure to be a crowd-pleaser with its juicy flavours upfront, and fine, structured finish. Those savoury and spice notes really make this wine and keep you guessing. So if you are in the mood for something a bit spicy, a little different, in your Pinot Noir, check this one out!
