Recently Nick from ND Wines reached out to me on Instagram and asked if I’d like to try his Shiraz. He sold it to me by saying it wasn’t the usual big and bold Barossa Shiraz, and I was intrigued. I couldn’t wait to try this wine and I have to tell you this did not disappoint! The wine is the first wine that ND Wines has produced, and looking at their Instagram I can see there is so much more to come in this year’s vintage. If this wine is anything to go by, I for one cannot wait!
About ND Wines
ND Wines is five years in the making by Nick and Danielle who have teamed up to produce wild fermented, minimal intervention wines. The name of their winery is to signify the coming together of the two – they do everything together and their lives are better for it – so why not create wine together? They try to bring sustainability into everything they do, even the paper for their labels is sustainably sourced. They’ve started with a Shiraz from McLaren Vale and plan to expand to other varieties for the next vintage.
What I loved about the ND Wines Block 4 Single Vineyard Shiraz
I really enjoyed the ND Wines Block 4 Single Vineyard Shiraz 2021. It isn’t what you would be used to from the big and bold Shiraz of the Barossa Valley. These wines are jammy and usually quite high in alcohol. I do think there is a time and place for them, but I personally am a fan of a lighter style of Shiraz. So this wine really ticked the boxes for me, being more medium-bodied. Its juicy front and nice clean finish also made me think it would be great slightly chilled, meaning it would be awesome in Summer.
On the nose this wine is packed with red fruit – think cherries and strawberries. This follows through into the palate where there is also a really nice black pepper note. I loved the clean finish on this wine – it had just the right amount of acidity to balance out the juicy red fruit front. I loved the clean finish on this wine – it had just the right amount of acidity to balance out the juicy red fruit front. Honestly, this wine drinks more like a Syrah from France and I am here for it, especially when it is only $28 a bottle!
What to enjoy it with
The ND Wines Block 4 Single Vineyard Shiraz 2021 is perfect for pairing with food, especially in warmer weather. But it doesn’t necessarily need it like some of the big and bold Shiraz wines. So I think this would actually go really well with a cheese board as much as it would pair perfectly with BBQ. A hard cheese and a glass of this wine would just about do it for me!
In summary: ND Wines Block 4 Single Vineyard Shiraz
The ND Wines Block 4 Single Vineyard Shiraz 2021 is a beautiful lighter style of wine and shows that there is something to get excited about with ND Wines as they take on their next vintage. After trying this wine I can’t wait to see what they release next! It’s simply delicious, and perfect for those looking for a lighter style Shiraz.
