Wine review: Mitchelton Estate Nagambie Shiraz
The Mitchelton Estate Nagambie Shiraz is a great Shiraz for those looking for one that’s more pepper than jam. Its lovely combination of red berry, spice and pepper makes it a beautiful wine for enjoying over a nice meal. This wine has a nice balance and really delivers on flavour with each sip unpacking more and more to be enjoyed over its long finish. Pair this wine with nice roast beef or even roast lamb and you have a taste sensation. It would also go oh so well with a really nice steak – of course!
On the nose, the Mitchelton Estate Nagambie Shiraz has beautiful red fruit flavours alongside lovely spices. There’s also a hint of oak to mellow it all out. This follows through to the beautifully balanced palate of raspberry, plum, pepper and spice. Although it is 14.5% ABV it drinks a little softer than this overall, despite having a lovely vibrancy upfront. The finish is nice and long, giving you time to really soak up those gorgeous flavours. This wine can be enjoyed now but would also be a great one to age.
About Mitchelton Estate
Mitchelton Estate goes back to 1836 when the explorer Major Thomas Mitchell crossed the river at the site on the way from Sydney to Melbourne. The intended riverside town was said to have been called Mitchellstown. In 1969 the vineyard’s first sod was turned when the first vines were planted on the site by Ross Shelmerdine and Colin Preece who set up the winery they called Mitchelton on the same site.
Mitchelton specialises in the production of Shiraz, Riesling and Rhone blend wines from grape to glass, and is known for bringing out unique regional characters in their wines.
The Mitchelton Estate Nagambie Shiraz is part of their limited edition range produced from fruit sourced across three of Mitchelton’s vineyards: Nagambie, Yarra Valley and Heathcote. The wine labels showcase artwork from Gabriella Possom Nungurrayi, currently featured in the Mitchelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art – Australia’s largest commercial Aboriginal art gallery.
