Wine review: Levantine Hill Estate Syrah 2019
Australia may be well known for its Shiraz, in particular Barossa Shiraz. But there is so much more to discover when it comes to Australian Shiraz (or Syrah) from other wine regions. The Levantine Hill Estate Syrah 2019 is a great example of this, being a cool climate style from the Yarra Valley. I love all styles of Shiraz, but I have to say cool climate is probably my favourite, and this Syrah hit the spot. In terms of the price point, it is more of a special occasion wine, but when you decide to crack it open, you are in for a treat!
The Levantine Hill Estate Syrah 2019 is a beautiful Syrah with nice complex notes to unpack yet a lovely refined palate. It is medium-bodied with a nice, rounded palate that is deep yet elegant. Notes of cherry and blueberry play alongside that classic pepper and a nice hit of spice throughout. It’s also got a hint of earthiness on the palate that balances out the notes from the black fruits. It’s the kind of wine that as you keep sipping opens up, delivering new notes and flavours to discover. It’s a real experience from start to finish and a wine you could age or enjoy now.
About Levantine Hill
Nestled in the heart of Australia’s Yarra Valley, Levantine Hill Winery is an absolute treasure trove for lovers of premium Australian wine. Since their first vintage in 2012, they’ve continued to make an impression and are considered some of the best wines in the Yarra Valley. Levantine Hill was established by the Jreissati family who bought a well-established vineyard on the Maroondah Highway at Coldstream and began creating a new one. Their wines are handcrafted without compromise, producing premium bottles with exceptional quality.
The winery began against the odds, with experts saying the terrain was incapable of sustaining vines in such an elevated location. But they persevered with a vision to produce exceptional wines, and now their vineyards have an elevation that is quite similar to the Grand Cru vineyards of Chablis, France. This spirit of determination shines through in their quality award-winning wines.
Levantine Hill Winery is known for its unwavering commitment to creating top-notch wines that are nothing short of a sheer delight. Heading the winemaking team is the incredible Paul Bridgeman, a winemaker extraordinaire with over two decades of experience. Paul’s infectious enthusiasm and passion permeate every bottle, from tenderly tending to the vineyards to producing wines that are an ode to the Yarra Valley’s terroir. Levantine Hill boasts a series of meticulously tended vineyard sites that lay the foundation for their winemaking excellence. These vineyards are strategically positioned to capture the essence of the Yarra Valley’s diverse microclimates, ensuring that each wine embodies the unique character of its origin.
