I’ve been getting into my white wines lately and this one from Koonara was so refreshing I simply had to share it! I’ve only recently been introduced to Koonara but just realised that my family are long term fans. My dad has a few of their bottles hidden away in his cellar. It’s easy to see why!
The Koonara wines have a big focus on environmental impact and as such as Organic with minimal pesticides too. Not only this, but the whites that I’ve tried have been seriously tasty so they really tick all the boxes! But this Pinot Gris was too good not to share some tasting notes of, so here we go!
About Koonara
Koonara has been a vineyard since 1988 but was purchased by the owners great grandfather in 1906 as a cattle farm. The property was named Koonara after the new name for the area.
They have a huge focus on building a sustainable ecosystem in their vineyards as they live on the site surrounded by family. Their Coonawarra Vineyards are certified to Australian Organic Standards and they have not used pesticides for over 10 years and only use four organic sprays a year. They also use no oak substitutes and have no residual sugar in their reds and whites. So you are really getting the wine as nature intended!
What I loved about the Koonara Lucy and Alice Pinot Gris 2020
The Koonara Lucy and Alice Pinot Gris 2020 is a seriously refreshing drop. With no residual sugar and low sulphites, it would be rude not to enjoy it!
On the nose, I got some beautiful aromas of florals and pear. Pear dominated in the glass along with a hint of apple and spice. These fruit-forward flavours were balanced by a nice crisp acidity at the end. I loved how this wine was so pretty on the nose, fruity on the palate and refreshing on the finish. It meant you got a little bit of everything in your glass! It also finished off nice and dry which made it perfect for enjoying warmer weather.
What to enjoy it with
Because the Koonara Lucy and Alice Pinot Gris 2020 is quite a light wine, you don’t really need to pair it with anything. To me, this is the perfect picnic wine and something you could enjoy with some friends on a warmer day. If you do want to pair it with food, opt for something light. Think of a nice salad or some fresh seafood. You don’t want anything that will overpower the flavours in the wine.
In summary: Koonara Lucy and Alice Pinot Gris 2020
The Koonara Lucy and Alice Pinot Gris 2020 is a beautiful wine with a pretty nose, fruity palate and crisp finish. It ticks all the boxes in flavour and is Organic, low sugar and low sulphite.
