I love a good Grenache blend. So When I was sent a few wines from Hutton Vale Farm, I got very excited to try the Hutton Vale Farm Grenache Mataro 2017. I haven’t tried their wines before, but after stalking them on Instagram I was very excited to give them a try. So I brought this along to share with friends at a BBQ and it was a serious hit! I almost wanted to keep it to myself, but wine is best shared with friends right?

What I loved about the Hutton Vale Farm Grenache Mataro 2017
The Hutton Vale Farm Grenache Mataro 2017 has a great story behind it. The Grenache was planted in the 1960s in a vineyard where the soil is so tough that some of the plantings didn’t take. New cuttings were acquired and just happened to be Mataro. Rather than start all over again, they made this beautiful Grenache Mataro blend.
I absolutely adored this wine. It was something special that made me really wish I had another bottle to enjoy. On the nose, it is ripe with red fruit flavours of plum and strawberry. But in the palate was where this wine really shined. It is quite a heavy wine at over 14% ABV, but it doesn’t drink like this. The palate is almost medium-bodied with a beautifully soft and smooth feel to it. The wine is quite elegant with a nice structure and fine tannins softening the finish, along with savoury notes to balance out that fruit.
This wine is a higher price point but totally worth it for how enjoyable it is to drink. It would make a great gift, or would also benefit from cellaring for a little before enjoying. If you can wait that long!
What to enjoy it with
The Hutton Vale Farm Grenache Mataro 2017 is perfectly paired with a good meal. It’s not the sort of wine you want to open with takeout on the couch (I mean unless you really want to feel fancy – no judgement here!). We enjoyed this wine with a BBQ and it was absolutely perfect. The flavours went so well with grilled meats and vegetables. If you’re not looking for a BBQ pairing, I’d suggest braised beef or lamb. Those flavours would match perfectly with the flavours in this wine.
In summary: Hutton Vale Farm Grenache Mataro 2017
The Hutton Vale Farm Grenache Mataro 2017 is truly a delightful experience to drink. I loved the flavours of fruit upfront that lead to a soft and smooth finish with fine tannins. This wine was complex yet elegant, and simply delicious. It is a perfect wine for a gift, a special occasion or as a splurge purchase. Whether you want to open it now or pop it away for a few years, you can choose! Personally, I wouldn’t want to wait to enjoy wine like this.
