I don’t usually drink much Malbec but after having this one from Clandestine Vineyards I think it is about time that I start! It’s not a grape variety that we see a lot of around Australia but I need to seek it out more because this wine was seriously tasty.

I’ve been really enjoying the wines from Clandestine Vineyards and this one seriously hit the spot for me. If you’re looking for great food wine honestly look no further. Hello summer BBQs!

About Clandestine Vineyards

Clandestine Vineyards Malbec 2019

Clandestine Vineyards’ focus is to represent 100% varietal wines from single vineyard sites across the best sub-regions for those varietals. Growers are chosen for best organic vineyard practices, zero harmful pesticides/herbicides and commitment to sustainability.

Coordinating 14 separate vineyards, two winemakers and two processing facilities across two states (WA and SA) is no easy task, especially in a pandemic, but Clandestine Vineyards takes it in their stride to produce incredible wines based on longstanding relationships and the founders, Nick and Trudy’s, vision for every vintage.

The Clandestine Vineyards Malbec 2019 is from a vineyard in the Karridale region of the Margaret River that was planted in 1996.

What I loved about the Clandestine Vineyards Malbec 2019

The Clandestine Vineyards Malbec 2019 seriously delivered on flavour. This wine is deep and bold and intense, yet beautifully balanced. On the nose, I got blackberries, blueberries and plum, as well as a hint of cherry. This was balanced by a hint of spice. I loved how aromatic this wine was, you could really unpack a lot in each sniff.

In the palate, this wine packs a punch. It is juicy upfront with spice and chalky tannins. This wine had a nice plushness to it and a good length. It is deep and bold in flavour yet more medium-bodied than heavy. Overall it is super appealing and has you coming back sip after sip.

This wine looks like it is going to be more intense than it actually is, and it is beautifully balanced. You could enjoy this wine now or wait 2-4 years to see how it develops.

What to enjoy it with

Clandestine Vineyards Malbec 2019

The Clandestine Vineyards Malbec 2019 is a bold wine that is best enjoyed with food. Those flavours will pair beautifully with a number of dishes depending on what you feel like. For me personally, I can’t think of a better pairing than BBQ. Grilled steak would be a perfect match for this deep and bold wine. Otherwise, any heavy meat dish would be beautiful alongside this wine.

In summary: Clandestine Vineyards Malbec 2019

The Clandestine Vineyards Malbec 2019 is deep and bold yet seriously delicious. What I loved the most about it was that it seemed like it should be heavier than it was. Those juicy upfront flavours were balanced by spice and a plush palate. Perfect for pairing with BBQ or meat dishes. If you haven’t tried Malbec before, definitely give this one a go!
