Wine review: Château Cazette 2022 Bordeaux

Recently, I was introduced to a bottle that reminded me why Bordeaux remains such an enduring classic: the Château Cazette Bordeaux Rouge 2022. I’m used to Bordeaux prices being up there, especially in Australia, but this wine is surprisingly affordable and seriously tasty! It was sent to me from The Wine Carousel, who are doing wonderful work championing small, artisanal French producers in Australia. With a focus on lesser-known regions like Jura and Beaujolais, their mission makes discoveries like this all the more exciting, especially when access to family-run estates can be hard to come by in Australia. Château Cazette itself has been in the Banier family since 1970, and this wine proves that Bordeaux doesn’t have to break the bank or always be a special occasion wine. This is the kind of wine that’s all too easy to drink!

In the glass, it sits as a bright ruby, offering aromas of cranberries, with a subtle earthy undertone and a hint of tobacco. On the palate, the blend of 65% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Cabernet Franc unfolds with lovely balance and poise. The Merlot brings a silky, rounded texture, while the Cabernet Sauvignon adds gentle structure, and the Cabernet Franc lifts the wine with aromatic complexity. There’s a medium to full body, framed by tannins that are not too harsh, and a refreshing line of acidity that keeps everything lively and drinkable. The fruit leans toward cranberries, cherries and blueberries, with an underlying savoury edge that makes it incredibly food-friendly. This is a charming, approachable Bordeaux that feels polished rather than pricey, and it would pair beautifully with grilled lamb, beef bourguignon, or a simple charcuterie board, though it’s just as enjoyable poured on a casual weeknight.
