The Calabria Family Wines Three Bridges Mourvèdre 2019 is a beautifully balanced wine with bright, lively flavours of raspberry, rose petal and spice balanced by velvety oak. This textural wine is mouth-filling and complex, yet smooth. This wine is the perfect pairing for food and would go well with grilled and roasted meats.
Last week I released a wine guide to Mataro – otherwise known as Mourvèdre in France (read more here). So I thought it would be perfect timing to share a beautiful Mourvèdre that we enjoyed a couple of weekends ago that seriously knocked my socks off. We brought the Calabria Family Wines Three Bridges Mourvèdre 2019 along to a friends house who invited us over for an Italian feast. She went all out with her decorations down to the red and white tablecloth and Italian word plates. But the food was what really shined. A feast of grilled meats, meatballs, salami and burrata. I was in heaven!
To be invited to such an incredible meal made me glad I could bring wine to match. I have to say the Calabria Family Wines Three Bridges Mourvèdre 2019 seriously delivered, and it was so good I had to share it with you all.
About Calabria Family Wines
The Calabria Family Wines story began in 1945 with founders Francesco and Elisabetta Calabria and is still carried on by the third generation of the family today. They established Calabria Family Wines 75 years ago with values of hard work and innovation at the heart of everything they do.
Today, Calabria Family Wines has vineyards in the Riverina region in New South Wales and the Barossa Valley, as well as sourcing fruit from local grocers. They have a range of wines to suit every taste and budget with everything from Italian varieties to more classic wines.
The Three Bridges range was started over 25 years ago with a commitment to selecting exceptional quality fruit for balanced full-bodied wines with plenty of character. What started in Riverina has now extended to include several of Australia’s most renowned regions, including the Barossa Valley. The name comes from the three bridges built in the early 1900s next to the winery that supplied water from the Snowy Mount scheme to the vineyards of Riverina.
Why I loved the Calabria Family Wines Three Bridges Mourvèdre
The Calabria Family Wines Three Bridges Mourvèdre 2019 was made using grapes from vines planted all the way back in 1914! Old vines tend to have intense flavours, and this really shone through in this wine. Although it is on the heavier side of medium-bodied, I found it quite easy to drink thanks to the beautiful balance in the palate. It was quite fruit-forward with raspberry and rose petals, along with some earthiness and spice. But what I loved most was the smoothness of oak influence that really rounded out the wine. It was quite a mouth-filling red with a lovely velvety smooth texture.
This wine is bright, fresh and youthful, and could easily be aged for a couple of years to further develop its flavours. But I really enjoyed how it was drinking now. It’s the sort of wine I kind of wish we’d enjoyed just the two of us because it was seriously delicious. But I am glad we could share it with friends over an amazing meal! At $35 a bottle, this wine is worth the price for the complexity of flavours and beautiful balance.
What to enjoy it with
The Calabria Family Wines Three Bridges Mourvèdre 2019 has bold flavours. As such, like many of this variety, it is best enjoyed with food. In fact, this wine seriously shines with a good meal. We enjoyed it with an Italian feast filled with different meats, cheeses and bold flavours. I think this wine really complimented this. A good BBQ would also be a great option.
Another perfect pairing would be roasted meat such as a beef roast. The rich flavours of the meat would go well with this bold yet fruit-forward wine.
In summary: The Calabria Family Wines Three Bridges Mourvèdre
The Calabria Family Wines Three Bridges Mourvèdre 2019 is a perfect food wine with beautiful flavours of raspberry and rose petal balanced out by spice and oak. I loved the velvety texture of this wine and how complex yet balanced it was. The old vines really shine through on this one, and it would be a great wine to cellar, or simply enjoy now with a nice meal.
