Wine review: Boydell’s Barrington Grüner Veltliner

It’s been a while since I’ve had a Grüner Veltliner, and so when I was sent Boydell’s Barrington release, I knew I had to start with their Boydell’s Barrington Grüner Veltliner. The Barrington release is grown in the Hilltops region of New South Wales, and is a range of small-batch wines that celebrate the unique, bio-diverse terroir and their sustainably crafted approach.

This wine is perfect for warmer weather, with beautiful aromatics and a zippy, crisp palate. It’s perfect for enjoying with spicy food, and would be right at home with a Thai or Indian curry. But you could also enjoy it with summer foods like grilled fish and fresh salads.

On the nose, the Boydell’s Barrington Grüner Veltliner is wonderfully aromatic, with a feast of fruits including lemon, apricot and passionfruit. These fruity notes shine through in the palate which is beautifully vibrant with plenty of zippy acidity. The finish is clean and crisp, making this wine refreshing. It’s light-bodied, dry and it pairs perfectly with Summer.

About Boydell’s

Boydell’s is named after Welshman Charles Boydell who settled in the Hunter Valley in 1826. In 1833 he planted one of the first vineyards in the Hunter Valley where he grew verdelho, muscatelle, and other varietals. In 2015, Jane and Daniel Maroulis purchased the property, and decided to give it the Boydell name to honour the rich history.

Sustainability is at the forefront of everything they do, and they are very hands-on when it comes to making wine, working closely with renowned winemaker Liz Silkman. They’ve made a conscious decision to keep production small in scale, allowing them to focus on creating a sustainable future for their vineyard and ensure the every bottle is as consistent and delicious as the last.
