You’ll enjoy it if: You’re looking for a winter warmer
The Beklyn Shiraz 2018 is a beautifully balanced yet powerful Shiraz. It is the perfect winter food wine, pairing perfectly with steak, BBQ and braised beef. Its flavours come together in a wine that isn’t overpowering yet still bold and rich.
This week I wanted to share a wine we enjoyed over the weekend courtesy of Good Pair Days. If you haven’t heard of this website before, check it out! They truly take the guesswork out of choosing wine you’ll love with a fun wine quiz. Whether you’re an expert or a complete beginner, it will ask you all the right questions to pull together a personalised flavour profile. Then you get recommendations for wines that you will love! They even let you know your match to each wine by a percentage which helps to guide your choice if you want to pick something else.
You can choose a monthly subscription or to grab a box, and you can also choose the mix of wines you get. I was really keen to try these wines I normally wouldn’t have thought to try – it was great knowing that they were recommended based on my flavour profile! But on Sunday night we needed a red wine to take to dinner, and I couldn’t wait to crack open this beautiful Shiraz from McLaren Vale.
Right now if you want to try out Good Pair Days, you can get $25 off your first monthly box with the code ‘cheekyvino’. Check it out now.
The Beklyn Shiraz 2018 is perfect for winter
Now onto the wine. The Beklyn Shiraz 2018 is from Currency Creek in the Fleurieu Peninsula which is in South Australia. The winery was called Beklyn as it means ‘Pretty Brook’. Mark and Rebekah Shaw are the owners and begun in wine in 1994, and now are producing some incredible wines in their own estate. I absolutely love this area, particularly for their red wines, and so I was super excited to try this one!
I love a good Shiraz in Winter, but I don’t love it when they hit me in the face too hard. Some I find are a little too high in their alcohol for me, so I’m always looking for ones that are beautifully balanced and rich without being overpowering. The Beklyn Shiraz 2018 ticked all the boxes for me.
Why I loved it
The Beklyn Shiraz 2018 is powerful and full of rich flavours. It is full-bodied and ripe, but nicely balanced. I really loved all the ripe berry aromas and spice in this wine. It also had a nice influence of oak that softened this out in the palate and gave it a subtle smoky flavour. Blueberry, spice, smokiness, subtle oak – what more could you want in your Shiraz?
This wine had a really great mouthfeel and the flavours really lingered long after you’d taken a sip. The tannins weren’t overwhelming and the hint of classic black pepper was perfect. I really loved how this wine was rich and bold without being overpowering. It was really approachable while still being warming and perfect for winter.
What to enjoy it with
The Beklyn Shiraz 2018 is a perfect food wine. We enjoyed this over dinner with some friends and I thought it went perfectly, especially in this cooler weather. We paired it with the classic Shiraz combo – steak. This wine will hold up well with BBQ and meat dishes, but it would also be great with braised beef. Think strong and rich intensely flavoured foods to pair along with this beautiful Shiraz.
The final word on the Beklyn Shiraz 2018
The Beklyn Shiraz 2018 is a great wine that made me think that Good Pair Days is really onto something. This wine was like the Shiraz from my dreams. It was easy-drinking yet rich, powerful but not too over the top. It was absolutely delicious and all too easy to finish. I’m really glad Good Pair Days pointed this one out to me because it was a winner in my books!
