- First Impression: Don’t be fooled by the buttery colour
- You’ll enjoy it if: You love a sweet, summery wine
This week I wanted to review a beautiful white wine of a variety I had never tried before. It’s from Italy, which has to be my favourite country for wines outside of Australia. I didn’t drink a whole heap of white wine while I was over there, and so I am not as familiar with the varieties from there. To be honest, this stands for white wine in general, although I am getting better! But I didn’t realise just how many different varieties of white wine you could get – honestly there are so many I don’t think I’ve even scratched the surface! Guess I am going to have to try more of them, what a shame!
Introducing the Greco
The wine I tried was the Fratelli Urciuolo Greco di Tufo. The grape variety is Greco, which I’ve never heard of before. I was lucky enough to try this at a family dinner with my partners family. His dad has the most amazing wines and is always trying new ones. When he asked me if I wanted to try this one I couldn’t resist giving something new a go. I am so glad I passed on the red this time around, because this wine was absolutely beautiful!
Why I loved it
What I couldn’t first get over was the colour. It was so yellow and bright, almost like a wooded chardonnay. But don’t be fooled by this, because the wine definitely wasn’t a chardonnay. It is so fruity and fresh when you smell it, it reminded me of a summers day. And when you tasted it, you got a hit of acidity after the initial fruity flavour that gave the wine a real zing of freshness. I really liked this because I was expecting from the colour for it to be quite heavy but it was actually very light and refreshing. Rounding off the flavour was a really subtle vanilla that left a nice sweetness in the mouth long after you took a sip.
What to enjoy it with
Because this wine is light I think it would go great with a light, fresh meal, or some starters. It would be perfect with a light salad or some fish I think, or just have it on its own and enjoy!
The final verdict
So there you have it, another Italian wine that I enjoyed. I don’t think this countries wineries can do any wrong in my book, each time I try a new wine or grape variety from there I just fall deeper in love. I think Italy is so well known for its reds that sometimes the whites get forgotten, but this wine proves they shouldn’t be!
