You’ll enjoy it if: You love Sangiovese or are looking for great food wine
The Vino Intrepido Sangiovese 2019 ticks all the Sangiovese boxes and more. It is beautifully balanced, nicely textured and with its long finish, you get to enjoy the flavours long after you take a sip. Perfect when paired with food, the fruity and savoury notes in this wine shine.
We all know how much I love Sangiovese, so much that I have another one to share with you already! There’s something about this Italian variety that is just so good. It is so versatile, perfect with food, but not too heavy. It ticks all the boxes for me, and this week I wanted to share one that made me sit back and go ‘yum’.
No seriously, my partner must have got so frustrated. He was trying to watch TV and I was sitting there marvelling at this wine. “It’s just so easy drinking, can you believe it’s from 2019?” Well, needless to say, he agreed with me, and eventually, I got back to watching the TV. Eventually.
The Vino Intrepido Sangiovese 2019 ticked all the boxes for me
James Scarcebrook started Vino Intrepido in 2016 because he was a wine lover who wanted to see what it was like to make wine. The project was for his interest, and he focused on making wines from Italian varieties using grapes from regions around Australia. His love of wine shines through the finished product of his range of delicious and unique wines.
Each of his wines has a great name full of character. The name of the Vino Intrepido Sangiovese 2019 is ‘Blood of My Blood’. This references the meaning of Sangiovese (blood of Jove) and also references Game of Thrones. Sangiovese and Game of Thrones? Sounds like my cup of tea!
I can’t say I’ve had many Sangiovese wines from Heathcote, but after trying this one I definitely want to give more a go!
Why I loved it
The Vino Intrepido Sangiovese 2019 is just plain delicious. Every sip left me wanting another, and to me, that is a sign of a great wine. It isn’t the cheapest Sangiovese I’ve had, but it is certainly worth it for something so tasty. For a relatively young wine, it’s drinking oh so well. I would love to grab a few more bottles and see how it matures over time as the flavours develop, but you could just as easily open it now.
On the nose, I got a hit of fresh red fruit. Think cherries and plums, along with slight savoury notes of dried herbs. I got these same flavours in the taste, but a little bit of spice and earthiness too. It wasn’t too heavy but still packed a punch with hints of acid, great texture and good tannin balance. The best part about this wine was the long finish. The flavours really lingered, which is what you want in such a delicious wine. I loved how balanced this wine was overall – it was truly delicious to drink! Sweet yet savoury, not too heavy but beautifully textured.
What to enjoy it with
The Vino Intrepido Sangiovese 2019 is best enjoyed with food and is calling out to be paired with something delicious. When it comes to what, the world really is your oyster (although maybe don’t pair it with seafood). To me, this wine could go beautifully with pizza or pasta (just like the Italians do), or also stand up with a nice steak. The complexity of the palate and texture of the wine really lends itself to plenty of foods.
The final word on the Vino Intrepido Sangiovese 2019
The Vino Intrepido Sangiovese 2019 is simply delicious wine. It is so beautifully balanced with a nice long finish. With all those flavours you would anticipate from a Sangiovese plus a great texture and blend of acid and tannin, this wine is one of those ones you’ll wish you had another bottle of. The great thing about this wine is that it will also lend itself to so many different foods, so it truly is a no brainer for your next nice meal!
