Looking for a delicious Italian red? Well, have I got the wine for you. I was recently sent a couple of wines from Vino Intrepido and I was beyond excited. After tasting a few of their wines last year I fell in love (read my Sangiovese review here). So when this Nero d’Avola arrived that I hadn’t tried before I absolutely could not wait to crack it open!
Have you tried Nero d’Avola before? The variety is originally from Sicily but I’ve been seeing it more and more in Australia. If you haven’t tried it yet, might I suggest you give this one a go because it is something special!
About Vino Intrepido
James Scarcebrook started Vino Intrepido in 2016 because he was a wine lover who wanted to see what it was like to make wine. The project was for his interest, and he focused on making wines from Italian varieties using grapes from regions around Australia. His love of wine shines through the finished product of his range of delicious and unique wines.
James is passionate about furthering the understanding and appreciation of both Italian wines and Italian grape varieties in Australia. He selects varieties that suit the Australian climate and soil, and also focuses on the region. His focus is on using his experience to make approachable and surprising wines.
The Vino Intrepido ‘Nero’s Fiddle’ Nero d’Avola came about after a hunt for grapes led to a conversation about some Nero d’Avola grapes in Mildura. James wanted to experiment with warm-climate dry-grown vineyards producing light-bodied red wines. It was one of his most successful wines in 2017 and so he has brought it back for us in 2020!
Why I loved the Vino Intrepido ‘Nero’s Fiddle’ Nero d’Avola
The Vino Intrepido ‘Nero’s Fiddle’ Nero d’Avola is an easy-drinking red that is incredibly approachable. Its deep colour in the glass shouldn’t fool you as the palate is bright and fresh. I got cherry and floral through the nose which transferred to the palate. This wine is juicy and fruit-forward with just enough tannin to balance it out but not overwhelm.
What I love about this wine is that it isn’t too heavy or too light. It is just right and is simply delicious. It’s the kind of wine you don’t need to overthink. Just crack it open and enjoy! For this reason, I think it is a real crowd-pleaser that is sure to tick the boxes over dinner with friends.
What to enjoy it with
The Vino Intrepido ‘Nero’s Fiddle’ Nero d’Avola is light and easy-drinking, but I think it would still pair perfectly with a meal. It’s the kind of wine you could bring along to a dinner party and have it go with plenty of dishes. The kind of wine you don’t need to think too much about pairing perfectly.
Personally, I can see this wine going so well with a nice tomato-based pasta or even pizza. Do as the Italians do! Alternatively, I think this wine would be a great wine to bring along to a BBQ and served with some steaks.
