Wine review: The Islander Estate 360 Tempranillo 2022

A couple of months ago I was sent some wines from the Islander Estate to learn more and try wines from Kangaroo Island, a region I’m yet to visit. I’ve been enjoying learning more about the region and tasting the wines of course, but I didn’t know it would lead me to trying a Tempranillo from Spain! And a delicious Tempranillo at that. The Islander Estate 360 Tempranillo 2022 is part of the wineries 360 range where Kangaroo Island’s Yale Norris and Spanish Winemaker Manual Carrizosa, have united to bring together the winemaking traditions from around the world. It honours the adventurous spirit of winemaking and celebrates global discovery and connection. I love the idea of bringing together the winemaking from an island in Australia and Spain!

The Islander Estate 360 Tempranillo 2022 is a higher price point wine which makes it perfect for special occasions and gifts. But it’s easy to see why when you pop it open, even when it is still relatively young. The grapes were hand-picked from dry-grown bush vines, wild fermented in barrels and hand-pressed, making this wine a labour of love. And that labour has delivered in a delicious Tempranillo that is packed full of flavour. On the nose raspberry and plum dominate, and these red fruit notes flow into the palate which has a nice influence from two years on French oak. The palate is rich and rounded, with lovely notes of vanilla, cherry and chocolate. It’s a smooth wine with a nice structure and plenty to unpack sip after sip. Pop this wine away for a few years and I’m sure it will reward you!
