Have you tried Mouvedre before? Or perhaps you’ve only heard of it under its other names – Monastrell or Mataro. Maybe you only know it in a blend of GSM! Regardless of how you know it – you’re tasting the same grape! It’s grown in many regions across the world, whether it is France, Spain, the US and even here in Australia! In Australia, it is quite common to find this in blends of Grenache and Shiraz, but there are some great single varietals being produced, the Syrahmi 2017 Mouvedre included!
The Syrahmi 2017 Mouvedre is part of the Support Victorian Wineries No Alternative Pack which includes six beautiful wines that take you on a journey of discovery. I’ve really enjoyed each and every single one as they’ve all offered something unique, and I am sad to say I have finally finished the pack with this show stopper!
Luckily it was so delicious to enjoy! This wine is from Heathcote in Victoria in soils that produce amazing complexity and length of flavour. This wine was bright and fruity but had a really nice savoury earthiness to balance it out. Think rip berries and raspberries on the nose followed by dried herbs and spice. The Syrahmi 2017 Mouvedre is a medium-bodied wine but has a refreshingly light feel making it perfect for enjoying with dinner even in Summer! I loved the velvety texture of this wine and the long lingering finish.
Food pairing wise, we enjoyed this with a light meal. But because it is a lighter style of wine, enjoying it pre-dinner with some cured meats would be perfect!
