Wine review: Stable Tales Shiraz 2021

After a few weeks of moving madness, I’m back to posting, and I’ve got a great wine to kick us off! I’ve been a long-time fan of the wines from Stable Tales, having tried a few of their previous vintages from 2016 and 2019. So when I was sent their latest vintage, the Stable Tales Shiraz 2021 to try, I was very excited. Stable Tales specializes in their shiraz, being the only wine this boutique winery produces. And they epitomise doing a small number of things really well with this wine!

The Stable Tales Shiraz 2021 is a beautiful Shiraz with plenty of rounded flavour and softness for a full-bodied wine. On the nose, it has a lovely aroma of plum, blackberry and vanilla. These notes follow through into the palate which has a lovely hint of spice to balance out the fruit and vanilla. The wine has a nice, rounded mouthfeel and nicely integrated tannins that are sure to continue softening. It’s velvety and smooth, ticking all the boxes for a delicious full-bodied red. I always describe the Stable Tales Shiraz as a warm hug, and this vintage is no different! It’s perfect for pairing with food, whether you opt for a steak or roasted lamb. And if previous vintages are anything to go by, if you’re willing to wait, this wine would reward a few years of cellaring too!

About Stable Tales

Stable Tales started as a horse property in the 1980s and was home to over 20 horses for 36 years. Their horses and vehicles were used for everything from weddings, films, TV, and commercials and even used for the Queens Royal Tour of Glenelg in 1986! They were also home to one of South Australia’s prominent brewery’s Clydesdale horse team. Talk about a claim to fame!

The horse business ceased in the late 1990s and the vineyard was planted producing some stunning Shiraz for us all to enjoy. When the vineyard was planted the horses became weeders and pruners of the property. The last horse Quazi was laid to rest in August 2019. I love the connection with the history of the vineyard that you see on the labels of their beautiful wines.

The 20-year-old vineyard is just one acre on gently sloping land near McLaren Vale. Although the property isn’t registered organic, they operate with minimal intervention for disease management.
