Have you tried much New Zealand wine? They may be known for their Sauvignon Blanc, but they are no one-trick pony. And the Smith & Sheth Syrah 2019 proves just that!
Having visited Central Otago a few years ago I have had a few from this region but I haven’t had the opportunity to really explore other regions. And there is so much to discover when it comes to New Zealand wines!
New Zealand is recognised all over the world for its commitment to creating environmentally conscious, sustainably-minded food and wine. The new Made with Care initiative is all about reinforcing these values unique to New Zealand’s food and beverage industry, originating from its Māori culture.
I was recently sent a few NZ wines to try and couldn’t wait to share them with you all. Starting with the Smith & Sheth Syrah 2019 from the Hawke’s Bay region. I’ve had some great Pinot from NZ and was excited to try their take on a Syrah. I have to say I was not disappointed.
The Smith & Sheth Syrah 2019 was simply delicious, and softer than what we might be used to in Australia with our bold Shiraz. On the nose, this wine has classic pepper and floral notes along with a hint of plum. This follows through to the palate where the use of new oak adds complexity and vanilla to the flavours. This wine is savoury with a beautiful long finish and a really nice structure to bring it all together. I love that it isn’t too over the top powerful or dry. It tastes just right to me!
Pairing wise you can’t go past steak or grilled lamb. I think this wine was drinking great now but I’d love to see how it develops over the next 10 years.
Live in Australia and want to give this wine a go? Lucky for you it is available right here for us to try! Find out more about Smith & Sheth at their website.
