The Save Our Souls Chardonnay 2018 is a zippy and refreshing unoaked Chardonnay with plenty of flavours and a great texture. A hit of citrus and lime makes this wine oh so fresh and mouthwatering. Flavours of peach, hazelnut and lime came together into a taste sensation. This wine is simply tasty and all too easy to polish off!
We love Chardonnay in our household. My husband thinks the butterier the better. But I personally love discovering the whole spectrum of what this versatile grape has to offer. So when I was sent some wines from Save Our Souls to try, the Chardonnay immediately caught my eye. It is an unoaked one so the hubby was a little sceptical. But it seemed to win even him over, so I reckon it must be pretty good!
I’ve been a big fan of Save Our Soul Wines for years. We actually served their Sangiovese (more on my love affair with this wine later) and their Rosé at our wedding! But I had never tried their Chardonnay before and my gosh was it delicious. It wasn’t the sort of Chardonnay we normally go for because it was unoaked, but I still really enjoyed it for something different and seriously refreshing!
About Save our souls
Save Our Souls was started in 2008 when Jason and Bill met in the vine rows of Bass Phillip. Over lunches and wine, their bond grew and they started their own endeavour. What started with a savoury and crisp Rosé expanded to include an offering of Italian varieties as well as more well-known wines like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Jason and Bill aren’t about creating wine for awards. They want to make delicious wines that punch above their weight and are perfect for enjoying with friends. Wines for every day in every day. They get grapes from all over Victoria, partnering with vineyards that share their passion from Mornington Peninsula, the Yarra Valley and Heathcote.
What I loved about the Save Our Souls Chardonnay 2018
The Save Our Souls Chardonnay 2018 uses two parcels of fruit to create a unique flavour in the wine. The first was Mendoza Chardonnay hand-harvested from Coombe Farm in the Yarra Valley. It was whole bunched pressed and fermented in tank and allowed to go through malo. Then the second parcel of fruit, Clone 96, was pressed and chilled in stainless steel tanks. The final wine is a blend of the two with 65% Mendoza and 35% Clone 96.
As I mentioned we don’t normally have unoaked Chardonnay but I was really interested to try this style as the wine had still undergone some malolactic fermentation, giving a hint of creaminess. This made the wine really interesting, and I found that each sip had me discovering new textures and flavours. It was a really enjoyable wine to drink before even getting into the flavours. But the flavours were where it is at – I loved the hit of lime that made this wine seriously refreshing and crisp. I also got a hint of nuttiness from the malo – think hazelnuts and some peach and grapefruit along with it. There was so much packed into this wine but it all worked beautifully together.
This wine definitely lives up to the ethos of Save Our Souls. It is easy-drinking, simply delicious, and the sort of wine that is going to be a crowd-pleaser. You don’t need to think too much about opening it, and it is sure to go down well with friends. It’s as simple as that.
What to enjoy it with
The Save Our Souls Chardonnay 2018 is a wine you could easily enjoy with or without food. It is a great Chardonnay for warmer weather with its refreshing flavours. I can definitely see myself enjoying a bottle of this with friends at a picnic. We enjoyed this wine while playing a board game before dinner, and I found we didn’t really need food with it because it was so refreshing. It was actually a great palate cleanser before a meal!
But if you want to pair it with something, I think roast chicken would be a serious winner. That or something salty like potato chips or popcorn. I’m going through a massive popcorn phase at the moment and this seems like a winning combo to me!
In summary: Save Our Souls Chardonnay 2018
The Save Our Souls Chardonnay 2018 is a deliciously refreshing Chardonnay that is packed full of flavour and character. It is the kind of wine that is perfect for enjoying with friends, with or without food. Flavours of lime, hazelnuts and peach come together for an easy-drinking, crowd-pleasing wine. Simple as that!
