You’ll enjoy it if: You like a fruity Shiraz
The Rothesay Estate Shiraz 2018 is a perfect food wine. Juicy, intense and fruit-driven, it is bold but smooth. The boldness of this wine is nicely balanced by a hint of oak at the finish. Enjoy it with slow-roasted meat or tomato-based sauces.
We’re very lucky in Queensland to see a bit of an easing of restrictions with social distancing, we were lucky enough to head to friends for dinner. You don’t realise how much you miss seeing friends until you can’t and I felt so grateful to be able to actually leave our apartment! It felt almost normal catching up over a couple of wines and some dinner. We brought along some wine and it was so delicious I simply had to share it with you all. It was also yet another excuse to drink some delicious Aussie Wine from Rothesay Estate!
The Rothesay Estate Shiraz 2018 is easy-drinking goodness
The Rothesay Estate Shiraz 2018 has come all the way from the Pyrenees in regional Victoria. I can’t say I’ve had many wines from this region but this wine made me realise I need to seek them out more. Peter Chapman from Rothesay estate has the vision to produce great wines that reflect their region whilst respecting everything that goes into producing the wines. Their name is a nod to the Phoenix which symbolises rebirth and renewed life. A message that seems all too relevant in these current times!
The vintage was hot and dry in 2018 which is reflected in this juicy Shiraz. This Shiraz is drinking oh-so-well now, which makes it perfect for enjoying while we are all stuck inside!
Why I enjoyed it
The Rothesay Estate Shiraz 2018 is a delicious, fruit-driven Shiraz rather than Spicy. It had a deep, purple colour in the glass, and this deep colour was reflected in the taste. This wine is bold and intense, full of juicy flavours. I got really strong tastes of berries – cherries and raspberries to be precise. It’s the sort of wine that packs a punch but wasn’t too overwhelming. A subtle oak at the end made the wine quite smooth and meant it was all too easy to take another sip.
So who would like this wine? If you love a bold wine, this one will be for you. It is juicy and packed full of flavour. But it isn’t overwhelming with a nice smooth finish, so it is quite approachable. Perfect for bringing over to a friend’s for dinner, or pairing with food at home! It’s drinking well now but you could also cellar it for 5 to 10 years to develop the flavours. Personally? I wouldn’t want to wait to enjoy this one!
What to pair it with
The Rothesay Estate Shiraz 2018 is a food wine through and through. It is bold and intense, so best paired with a meal. The best pairing would be slow-roasted meat dishes. Something like a roast lamb would go so well with this wine. You could also pair it with a dish with a rich tomato-based sauce. Anything that has its own bold flavours will stand up to this juicy wine!
The final word on the Rothesay Estate Shiraz 2018
The Rothesay Estate Shiraz 2018 is a great food wine and just plain delicious. It’s juicy and fruit-driven but has a nice smooth finish with a hint of oak. Enjoy it now or cellar it for a few years depending on whether you are willing to wait! Personally, I would crack this open over a nice slow-roasted lamb and sip and enjoy!
