The Richard Hamilton Old Vine Grenache 2020 is a luscious, juicy and textured Grenache. The use of old vine fruit adds beautifully balanced complexity that I adored unpacking sip after sip. Cherry, raspberry and a hint of spice came together in this fragrant wine that seriously delivered sip after sip.
I love a good Grenache, and so when I was sent some wines from Richard Hamilton Wines to try, I was beyond excited to try their Old Vine Grenache. And I have to tell you, this is a special one. My husband’s dad loves McLaren Vale Grenache and so I shared this bottle with him. He is very into his wine and really enjoyed this one. So if that isn’t a glowing recommendation I don’t know what is! Other than mine of course.
Old Vine wines have a greater depth of flavour as they tend to produce smaller grapes. Australia has some of the oldest Grenache vines in the world, and so using these to produce this wine has really added some beautiful complexity to it. This wine was polished off all too quickly as the rest of the family cottoned on to how good it was. But the glass I did get I was seriously obsessed with.

What I loved about the Richard Hamilton Old Vine Grenache
The Richard Hamilton Old Vine Grenache 2020 is a seriously delicious wine that unpacks more and more with each sip. It’s seriously fragrant with fruit dominance on the nose. I got a big hit of cherry and a hint of subtle oak. On the palate was where this wine really shined, however. It is fruit-forward with raspberry and plum but this was balanced by a luscious palate texture and a hint of spice. This wine was beautifully textured with enough tannin to carry it through and a good length. It was the kind of wine I kept going back to and really wished I had another glass of.
This wine is 14.5% ABV but it actually drunk a lot lighter than this. It wasn’t a light-bodied Grenache but also wasn’t full either. I loved the palate weight which wasn’t too overpowering or heavy. It was honestly just right. If you don’t normally like Grenache that is overly light and fruity, I think you’ll enjoy this wine.
What to enjoy it with
The Richard Hamilton Old Vine Grenache 2020 is perfect with food. We enjoyed it before dinner but I think it would be great with a meal. Whether it is a grilled or braised meat dish or even Asian cuisine. This wine would actually go well with a number of dishes. Unfortunately for us, it was polished off well before dinner, so keep in mind not to open it too early!
