Over the past few weeks, I’ve been trying the range from Prometheus Wines and absolutely loving them. Their wines are right up my alley as they focus on Mediterranean varieties so you can imagine I hardly knew where to start. I felt like a kid in a candy store! So I thought I would share my review of one of their wines I particularly enjoyed – their Barbera.

I had the pleasure of chatting to the team behind Prometheus Wines before Christmas in an Instagram live and absolutely loved hearing their story. The passion they put into their wines is incredible. They are also huge advocates for promoting the Riverland wine region which until recently has had a bit of a reputation for bulk wines. But producers like Prometheus Wines are proving it should be on the map! The proof is in the pudding with these beautiful wines.

What I loved about the Prometheus Wines Barbera

Prometheus Wines Barbera

I really enjoyed the Prometheus Wines Barbera 2021. It delivered on everything I wanted it to and more. Barbera isn’t something you find that much of here in Australia and can carry quite a high price tag, so being able to get one for $25 a bottle is so good! Especially when it tastes like this.

This wine is seriously delicious – it is vibrant both in the glass and in its flavours with beautiful fruity notes and a good hit of acidity, but gentle and soft tannins. It doesn’t rip your mouth out as you enjoy it and has just the right amount to balance the other flavours. This is why even though this wine is young, you don’t need to wait to enjoy it.

Flavour-wise I got beautiful notes of cherry and blueberry which were balanced by herb and spice and a hint of earthiness. I really loved this complexity as the wine gives so much. It’s simply delicious and a joy to drink from start to finish.

What to enjoy it with

The Prometheus Wines Barbera 2021 is a great food wine and best enjoyed with friends. It’s the kind of wine you don’t need to think too much about opening and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. I mean it looks great with its different bottle and label, but inside this wine is delicious.

Food-wise I don’t think you could go wrong with pairing this with Italian food such as red based pizza or pasta. I feel like a bolognese could be in order with this wine! If Italian isn’t on the cards, this wine would also be paired beautifully with roasted or grilled meats.

In summary: Prometheus Wines Barbera

The Prometheus Wines Barbera 2021 is a crowd-pleasing wine filled with delicious flavours. From its fruity and vibrant palate to its soft and gentle tannins, this wine is a joy to drink. At $25 a bottle, it is the perfect wine to enjoy with friends over a delicious meal.
