Wine review: Primo Estate Quaranta Cinque

The team at Primo Estate are celebrating 45 years in the best way: by releasing a special wine we can all enjoy along with them! The Primo Estate Quaranta Cinque is a special edition wine to celebrate 45 years since their first harvest in 1979. Primo Estate describes this wine as ‘the soul of Primo Estate in a bottle’, a sentiment I love.

What started as a tiny crush from Joe Grilli’s father’s vineyard handmade, bottled and labelled by him and his siblings has grown into the Primo Estate we know and love today. And love I certainly do! Our family are big Primo Estate fans, my dad is a loyal follower of their wine club, so we’re always enjoying Primo Estate as a family. We also love their olive oil, which you should try if you can find it. But I digress, back to the wine! I think it’s great to have the opportunity to celebrate this milestone with Primo Estate.

The Primo Estate Quaranta Cinque is a special blend and something I’ve never tried before. They’ve fused 2022 Shiraz from McLaren Vale and Clarendon with their JOSEPH Sparkling Red ‘mother’ base wine which contains over 40 vintages of aged Shiraz. So when you enjoy this wine, you are enjoying its history through your glass! The wine is then finished with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon from the JOSEPH Moda which is made from dried grapes. The result is an incredibly complex wine that delivers so much flavour. The palate is deep and rich with plum and blackberries upfront and a hint of cherry. This is nicely balanced by lovely spice and herbal notes along with a touch of raisin for added complexity. The finish is long, giving you plenty of time to relish in the lovely notes that dance across the palate. It’s an absolute stunner from start to finish!

About Primo Estate

Primo Estate is the home of JOSEPH wine and olive oil. They are a family-owned winery whose story began in 1953 when 18-year-old Primo Grilli landed in South Australia from the Le Marche region of Italy. They had their first vintage in 1979, and in 2006 Joe Grilli went on to plant his dream vineyards in McLaren Vale.

Today, they make a unique range of wines that reflect their Italian heritage and their belief that good food and wine are essential to celebrating life. Every year Joe makes two wines in Italy: The Tuscan and The Venetian, using a modern Australian winemaking approach to vinify traditional Italian grapes.

The Primo Estate’s future is also bright with the next generation beginning to make their mark, studying in wine and working at Primo Estate.
