I was sent a few Pawn Wine Co wines (read my review of the Fiano here) to try after lusting after their striking labels on Instagram for a while. I was a little shocked to find that I hadn’t tried the Sangiovese yet! It was tucked away on my wine rack, just waiting for that opportune moment. When I found it I was so excited. I love Sangiovese as you will know by now, so I could hardly believe my luck!
This Sangiovese was absolutely delicious and delivered everything I wanted it to and more. I loved it so much I had to write up a review so that you might be inspired to try it too! Plus look at that striking label – what’s not to love?
About Pawn Wine Co
The Pawn Wine Co started in 2002 and has a great story behind the name. Vignerons and winemakers Tom Keelan and wife Rebecca Willson had a parcel of fruit deemed not good enough by a larger wine company. They felt they had become mere Pawns in the global wine game, doomed to be played and moved around, and ultimately sacrificed.
So they rolled up their sleeves and set out to make small hand selected parcels of wine from alternative varieties grown in the Adelaide Hills and Langhorne Creek. The name comes from proving that these alternative varieties can make amazing wines as stand-alone varietals.
What I loved about the Pawn Wine Co Sangiovese 2018
The Pawn Wine Co Sangiovese 2018 is an absolutely delicious red wine. Simple as that. It’s packed full of fruit notes on the nose – think cherry, raspberry, cranberry and plum. This was balanced by spice and that classic Sangiovese herb note. These notes followed through into the palate which also had really nice complementing notes of leather and that beautiful spice. The wine itself is nice and dry with soft tannins and a long complex finish. You’ll be tasting this wine long after you take a sip, and that’s my idea of a good time.
This Sangiovese is complex yet beautifully balanced. There is so much to unpack within its layers, but I had so much fun doing it!
What to enjoy it with
The Pawn Wine Co Sangiovese 2018 is crying out to be paired with food. There’s nothing better for Sangiovese than enjoying it with a tasty meal. I think you can’t go past classic pairings of pizza or pasta with this wine. Tomato-based would be best. These flavours would really compliment the flavours in the wine. I can’t think of a better pairing for this wine than a good movie and a big bowl of pasta on the couch.
When in doubt, do as the Italians do!
In summary: Pawn Wine Co Sangiovese 2018
