I’ve slowly been working my way through my latest drinking wines from Vinomofo, and I stumbled across the Navarro Correas Colección Privada Malbec 2017. There have been some crackers in the last box that I got, and this one has to be one of my favourites so far. I don’t often drink that much Malbec, so I was curious to give it a go, and I’m so glad I did! Unfortunately, it is sold out now. If it wasn’t I definitely would be stocking up on this one.

I love trying new wines, but it can be hard when you love one that comes from a winery subscription service that you can’t buy again. It often has me hoarding my wines, which is silly because I buy them to drink now! I’m trying now to just appreciate them for what they are, and not worry as much about not having another bottle. This is why I think reviewing the wine is important because it means that the wine is forever immortalised on the Cheeky Vino. Like a regular wine graveyard. Well, that just got morbid. Let’s say it’s more like a museum of the wines I tried and loved.

Malbec mania with Navarro Correas Colección Privada Malbec 2017

Malbec is definitely having a moment, but it isn’t something that is widely available in Australia at the moment. It isn’t really grown here, and in bottle stores, you’ll normally find maybe a bottle or two if you’re lucky. So it’s great to have this wonderful thing called the internet that makes these wines accessible to everyone!

Malbec wines are great food wines, but also really affordable on the wine spectrum, particularly those that come from Argentina. This is the birthplace of Malbec, and now we are lucky enough to have these fantastic wines shared across the globe. However, as there isn’t a lot of knowledge about Malbec in places like Australia, it can be hard to know which ones will be good, or what wineries to look out for. And when the wine is often under $15, you may find yourself feeling a little apprehensive on the quality.

The great thing about Malbec is that it is really affordable, but also absolutely delicious! Perfect for the meat eater in your life, these powerful wines go perfectly with a good meal, and at this price point you don’t have to worry about breaking the bank.

Why I love it

The Navarro Correas Colección Privada Malbec 2017 is a great example of the Malbec variety. Although it doesn’t have much age on it, the wine is very tannic and so really packs a punch of flavour. When I smelt it I got great aromas of spices and red fruits, and the taste is really powerful as you would expect from a good food wine. You get plum up the front followed by a nice spicy finish.

It got even better the longer we left it out. I would recommend letting this wine breath for a few minutes before taking your first sip, as it is quite tannic and the oxygen allows these to soften a little before you dive on it to this glorious red wine.

I loved the intensity of this wine, but that it was really affordable. Something with such a good balance of flavours shouldn’t retail at under $10, but it goes to show you that price isn’t everything. You can get great wines on the cheap, and this is why I often opt for international wines if I am on a budget. Malbecs are one of those wines you can get at a steal, but that is fantastic with food. What more could you want?

What to enjoy it with

The Navarro Correas Colección Privada Malbec 2017 is definitely a food wine, so make sure you pair this with a meal. It is quite strong so without a food pairing, you are going to get punched in the face by that flavour. I mean, it will be an enjoyable punch, but a punch nonetheless.

When enjoying Malbec, eat as the Argentinians do. This wine is best paired with hearty meat dishes. Think delicious grilled and barbecued meat or anything with a tomato-based sauce. This wine would go great with a simple steak or slow cooked lamb.

Because this wine is a steal, you could also pair it with some takeout without feeling the least bit guilty about it. It goes best with enjoying a good meal and cuddling up on the couch in front of a good Netflix show, especially as we come into the cooler months!

The final word

The Navarro Correas Colección Privada Malbec 2017 is one of those unicorn wines that are absolutely delicious but really affordable. It can be so hard to find good wine at this price point, but trust me when I say that the Navarro Correas Colección Privada Malbec 2017 brings the goods. It is dark, moody and packed full of flavour, everything you want in a heavy red wine. And the best part is that you don’t have to feel the least bit guilty about drinking it, because at under $10 a bottle it is perfect drinking wine.

So cuddle up on the couch, grab some takeout and pour yourself a big glass of this fantastic Malbec. It’s like a warm hug, but with more spice and flair!
