Wine review: Mumm Central Otago Pinot Noir
You have probably heard of Mumm champagne before, but did you know they have also released their first still wine? Mumm has been experimenting with sparkling wines from other areas of the world beyond Champagne, and now they have released their first-ever Pinot Noir from the famous Central Otago in New Zealand. Central Otago is world-renowned for its beautiful Pinots, and the Mumm Central Otago Pinot Noir 2021 is a nice representation of what to expect from this region. The price point, although high, is pretty comparable with price points for quality Pinot from this region. This wine would be right at home with a special occasion meal, pairing beautifully with something like mushroom risotto or the classic Pinot Pairing of duck.
On the nose, the Mumm Central Otago Pinot Noir has lovely berry notes with blackberry and dominant cherry alongside a hint of chocolate. The palate has a lovely, smooth and elegant texture, with notes of plum, cherry and chocolate. There’s also a nice hint of vanilla and cedery oak at the finish, balancing out those fruit notes beautifully. This wine is a gorgeous sipper from start to finish, and if you love a fuller-bodied Pinot I’m sure you’ll love this one.
