Wine review: Levantine Hill Mélange Botrytis 2020
I have to admit I’m not usually a dessert wine drinker, but when I find a good one I really enjoy it. So when I gave the Levantine Hill Mélange Botrytis 2020 a go, I thought why do I not drink this more often? This wine is made using selected berries infected with Botrytis cinerea which creates a wine that is rich and lusicious yet elegant and structured. It is the perfect pairing alongside a cheese platter!
On the nose, the Levantine Hill Mélange Botrytis 2020 has lovely aromas of marmalade, honey and apricot. These notes follow through into the palate which has an almost panna cotta flavour alongside those orange and sugar notes and a hint of spice. It’s complex, and each sip has more to unpack. The finish has just the right amount of acidity to balance out the sweetness in the wine, making this a joy to sip.
About Levantine Hill
Nestled in the heart of Australia’s Yarra Valley, Levantine Hill Winery is an absolute treasure trove for lovers of premium Australian wine. Since their first vintage in 2012, they’ve continued to make an impression and are considered some of the best wines in the Yarra Valley. Levantine Hill was established by the Jreissati family who bought a well-established vineyard on the Maroondah Highway at Coldstream and began creating a new one. Their wines are handcrafted without compromise, producing premium bottles with exceptional quality.
The winery began against the odds, with experts saying the terrain was incapable of sustaining vines in such an elevated location. But they persevered with a vision to produce exceptional wines, and now their vineyards have an elevation that is quite similar to the Grand Cru vineyards of Chablis, France. This spirit of determination shines through in their quality award-winning wines.
Levantine Hill Winery is known for its unwavering commitment to creating top-notch wines that are nothing short of a sheer delight. Heading the winemaking team is the incredible Paul Bridgeman, a winemaker extraordinaire with over two decades of experience. Paul’s infectious enthusiasm and passion permeate every bottle, from tenderly tending to the vineyards to producing wines that are an ode to the Yarra Valley’s terroir. Levantine Hill boasts a series of meticulously tended vineyard sites that lay the foundation for their winemaking excellence. These vineyards are strategically positioned to capture the essence of the Yarra Valley’s diverse microclimates, ensuring that each wine embodies the unique character of its origin.
