Wine review: Levantine Hill Glen Garvald Ornelias 2020
Recently I was sent a few wines from the Glen Garvald range from Levantine Hill, and I couldn’t wait to jump in and try them. This range is named after a historical surveyor’s geographic marker overlooking their vineyard, representing their varietal and replanting response to climate change. For this range, they are experimenting with wines uncommon to the Yarra Valley with a combination of new and old techniques. It was hard to know where to start with these wines, as there are so many varieties to try! But I was drawn to the Levantine Hill Glen Garvald Ornelias 2020, which is a homage to the famous Super Tuscan blends.
The Levantine Hill Glen Garvald Ornelias 2020 is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Sangiovese, and is a delicious food wine! On the nose there are lovely black and red fruits, think currants, plums and blackberries, balanced nicely by an earthiness and spice that adds intrigue and complexity. This follows into the palate which is vibrant and juicy, yet deep and earthy. The influence of the two varieties plays together beautifully, with a good amount of acidity and lovely earthiness and spice. It’s a wonderful wine sip after sip, and would be right at home with a slow-cooked ragu.
