The Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Franc 2019 may not be as popular as its Cabernet Sauvignon counterpart, but it shouldn’t be! This wine is aromatic with floral and herb notes and seriously delivers on texture. It is soft and round with textured tannins and a long finish. Absolutely delicious sip after sip, and perfect for enjoying with a good meal.
I have to admit, I haven’t had many Leconfield Wines before. But now is a better time than any to start! I’m not usually one for Cabernet Sauvignon and so you don’t usually find me sipping on Coonawarra wines. I know, I know. But lately, I have been getting into the old Cab Sav, and really enjoying what I’ve been finding! So I was very excited to receive a range of Leconfield wines to sample.
I put it out to Instagram asking which one I should try first, and everyone said Cabernet. There were three Cabernets so I thought well why not start with something a little different – the Cabernet Franc!
About Leconfield Coonawarra
Leconfield Coonawarra has a long and rich history. It was established in 1974 by oenologist, Sydney Hamilton. At the age of 76 he yearned to make a classic Australian Cab Sav and so set out to find the right district to establish his own vineyard and winery.
He chose a piece of land at Coonawarra to fulfil this life ambition and called it Leconfield after his English ancestor, Lord Leconfield. Then he started working on establishing an amazing reputation for Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.
Today it Leconfield Coonawarra embraces the essence of Coonawarra by creating rich, elegant and sensual wines. The Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship wine but over the last two decades, the Riesling has also become a benchmark of the variety within Coonawarra. They’ve also expanded into other varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Merlot.
What I loved about the Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Franc 2019
The Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Franc 2019 was seriously delicious. I found it to be medium-bodied which I loved as it wasn’t too heavy. It was bright red in the glass, and incredibly aromatic. I found a lot of floral and herb on the nose which was seriously delicious.
In the glass, this wine seriously delivered. It was plush and rounded whilst also juicy. At the front, there was sweet fruit of strawberry and raspberry but this was balanced by cinnamon spice, herbs and a hint of savoury notes. The palate was soft with lovely textured tannins and a nice long finish. I think this wine is great for enjoying now but would also benefit from a couple more years in the cellar.
What to enjoy it with
The Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Franc 2019 is perfect for enjoying with food and would be a great accompaniment to most meals. I think roast meat such as beef or lamb would be a fantastic pairing with this wine. However, it would also be a great option when enjoying some Italian cuisine or even French. Many Cabernet Francs pair well with cheese, and I think this wine would be no different. Soft cheeses would be a fantastic pairing with this wine if you wanted to enjoy it before a meal.
In summary: Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Franc 2019
The Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Franc 2019 shows that Cabernet Franc is sometimes underrated. Although we often reach for the Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine offered something different. Its aromatic floral nose and herb notes balance out the juicy fruit on the palate. A touch of cinnamon adds even more to this wine. This soft, plush and round wine is perfect for enjoying with food. I really loved this wine and can’t wait to try some more of the Leconfield range.
