The Homeless Grapes Project Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 seriously delivers on bold, fruity flavours, and is an absolutely delicious food wine. But the best part about it is you are drinking for a good cause with 100% of profits going to AC Care who support those in need. So you can sip on delicious wine and get the warm fuzzies while you do it!
This year I’ve been lucky enough to try some of the great wines from the Vinomofo Homeless Grapes Project. Earlier in the year, they released their Chardonnay and Shiraz. Now they are on to a fantastic Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra. The best part about it is that you can sip on a great wine for a good cause – so you know what you’re drinking is making a difference. It totally means you are ok to have more than one bottle in that case!
If you are new to the Homeless Grapes Project, Vinomofo started it in 2015. Jock Harvey from Chalk Hill Wines had a surplus block of grapes that he offered to anyone interested for a donation to charity. Vinomofo jumped on the opportunity and decided to make a Shiraz and send 100% of the profits to charity. Since then this community-driven initiative has grown across wine regions. Vinomofo brings everyone together to produce incredible wines that we get to purchase and enjoy. If that’s not giving you the warm fuzzies I don’t know what will.
Warm fuzzies with the Homeless Grapes Project Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
The third wine for this year, the Homeless Grapes Project Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is supporting AC Care. AC Care has been working for over 30 years to help support the community across a wide range of issues in rural South Australia. They are a frontline charity who seek to enhance the wellbeing of rural people through social change.
But this wine couldn’t have happened without the community supporting the initiative. From the volunteers who pick the grapes, the winemakers producing the wine and the design of the label, this was a true community effort that brought everyone together for a good cause.
This year for the Coonawarra wine, six of the wine region’s makers came together to make a barrel each from their own vineyard. The wine was then blended as a team, bringing producers from the region together for an incredible wine! The producers include Raidis Estate, Hollick Estate, Patrick of Coonawarra, Redman Wines, Penley Estate and Jim Brand Wines. If you’re looking for an authentic red wine from Coonawarra you’ll get a sample from this one!
Why I love it
Coonawarra is well known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, and you can see why with the Homeless Grapes Project Cabernet Sauvignon 2018. This wine is bold and heavy with a good hit of tannin. However, what I really enjoyed about it was how approachable it was, particularly after it had a bit of time to breath. Although this wine is a heavier hitter, it also has a really satisfying length and great depth of flavour.
Speaking of the flavour, you’ll get some delicious berries from this one. Think blueberries with this one, as well as some savoury notes to balance it out. I really enjoyed the fruit element of this wine as I think it balanced out the tannins quite well.
Because this wine is so heavy, you could easily cellar it for a few years to develop the flavours. However, it truly is drinking well now, so I wouldn’t bother waiting if I were you. Just crack it open, chuck it in a decanter, and enjoy this bold and luscious drop. Warm fuzzies guaranteed – and not just from the heaviness of the wine!
What to enjoy it with
The Homeless Grapes Project Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is best enjoyed with food. The heaviness of the wine really lends itself to eating with dinner, so make sure you pick something suitably delicious and pour yourself a nice big glass.
A great pairing with Cabernet Sauvignon is lamb, and I think a nice lamb dish would go so well with this. You could also pair it with any grilled meat dish, or something tomato-based such as moussaka. The flavours in the meat will be complemented by the fruity, bold flavours in the wine. Taste sensation coming your way!
The final word on the Homeless Grapes Project Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
The Homeless Grapes Project Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is a beautiful food wine with really balanced flavours. It is a heavy red, but the hit of acidity and fruit-driven flavours made it quite a refreshing wine. I’ll admit, Cabernet Sauvignon isn’t normally high on my list, but I really enjoyed this one. Especially after it had breathed a little. However, the best part about this wine is that you can sip for a good cause. All profits from the wine go to AC Care in South Australia so they continue supporting those in need. You can sip on a glass of delicious wine and support charity – that my friends is a win-win.
