This week I thought it was about time that I reviewed a red from Naked Wines. I know a few of my reviews will come from their collection of wines, mainly because we always get deliveries of wine from them. They are great value, and you get to try wines you wouldn’t find in the bottle shop, so it is worth checking out if you feel like trying new things! We usually get just reds because we tend to only drink reds, although this has obviously changed in the past month or so, but the last batch we got had a mix which was good to try.
A midweek winner
My friend came over the night before we moved and as I had recommended Naked Wines to her, she thought she would bring over a bottle for us to drink from her box. She must know my taste well because she brought over the Rabbit & Spaghetti 2016 Tempranillo/Mataro/Grenache. I’m a sucker for a Tempranillo, and I’ve had this one before and absolutely loved it.
First thing I love about this wine, the region is it from is the “Adelaide Super Zone”. I don’t know about everyone else, but that name along makes me want to pack my bags and head over there to check it out! I feel like with a name like that, all the wines need to give you superpowers, right? Or at least be superb – which this one definitely is!
What to enjoy it with
This wine is a bit punchier than your normal Tempranillo due to the Matara and Grenache in it. This means it goes really well with heavier meaty meals, but could also swing just as easily to a nice light meal of cheese (which is what we had it with). It is quite tannic as well, which is fancy wine speak for it makes you pucker you lips when you drink it (Someone told me that once at a winery and it stuck).
Final verdict
The flavour of this wine is really big and complex, which I love. It also sticks around for a long time after you’ve had a sip, so you really get to savour all those big, beautiful flavours. I feel like the best part though is the Tempranillo makes it a very easy drinking wine, despite it being a bit on the heavier side with flavours. We definitely had no trouble finishing off this bottle in one sitting together. I guess it just went really well with the delicious cheese platter we had, and the great conversation.
