The Cape Banks Chardonnay 2019 from Koonara is a beautiful Chardonnay at an affordable price. The grapes are from Mount Gambier which actually has the coolest mean maximum temperature of any wine region in mainland Australia! This wine is also low sulphur and vegan friendly!
Koonara is a bit of an institution in Coonawarra and has been around since 1906. What started as a property to raise cattle named after the new name for the area at the time has become a certified Organic Vineyard in Coonawarra. All their operations are focused on quality and creating a sustainable eco-system in their vineyards.
Half of the wine was matured in new French oak for four months, so you can expect some malo in this one! The remaining wine was fermented out of oak. The result? A nicely balanced wine that I really don’t think would offend anyone – whether you like oaked Chardonnay or not!
I loved how tasty this wine was. You got crisp lime, apple and a bit of minerality on the palate. This was balanced by lovely flavours of milk and butter and a nice creamy palate. I loved the play between crisp acidity and creaminess in this wine – it really ticked all the boxes.
The Koonara Cape Banks Chardonnay 2019 retails at $25 which I think is affordable for something this tasty. It’s the sort of wine you don’t have to think twice about opening!
