You’ll enjoy it if: you prefer a lighter style wine
The Campbells of Rutherglen Trebbiano 2019 is easy-drinking and carefree. It’s light on the palate with a hint of acidity that makes it crisp and refreshing, without hitting you with an acidic kick. Perfect for enjoying over summer, you’ll find it goes surprisingly well with simple foods and light lunches.
If you’ve been with the Cheeky Vino for a while, you’ll know white wine is not my favourite. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t really discriminate at all when it comes to wine, but if you were to hand me a white or anything else, I’ll be honest I’ll probably choose the latter.
However, I am always searching for new wines to try, and this comes with trying all different kinds of white wine to find the one for me. I’ve found plenty in this hunt that I’ve loved, and that I would go back to. And the Campbells of Rutherglen Trebbiano 2019 definitely falls into this category! I’ve never had a Trebbiano before, so I was so intrigued to give this one a go, and it really blew me away.
The Campbells of Rutherglen Trebbiano 2019 is easy-drinking goodness
So what is Trebbiano? It comes from Italy, dating back to Roman times and possibly Bologna in the thirteenth century. It also pops up in Avignon in France as Ugni Blanc. Today, it is actually one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world. It is a high yielding grape that is planted all throughout Italy, and also used in Cognac and Brandy production.
Trebbiano is known for creating wines that are high acidity but with light aroma and flavour. This makes them perfect easy-drinking wines that are crisp and refreshing without hitting you in the face with acidity. It also makes them perfect for using in spirit production!
I’m surprised I haven’t come across Trebbiano before given its history, but this isn’t a grape variety that is planted much in Australia. Lucky for us, the Campbells of Rutherglen Trebbiano 2019 is here for us all to experience this different and delicious white variety!
Why I loved it
The Campbells of Rutherglen Trebbiano 2019 is so easy to drink. It doesn’t have much of an aroma or any hard-hitting flavours, but this means that the wine goes down all too easy. It’s refreshing on a hot day and perfect for cooling down in summer. I really enjoyed the light fruity flavours in this wine, along with a hint of lemon. These subtle flavours are rounded out by a really nice acidity that doesn’t hit you too hard but gives the wine the kick it needs.
The result? An incredibly refreshing wine with a really nice crisp finish. It is dry without being too acidity, refreshing without being too fruity. It makes it so easy to drink, and you’ll find it isn’t all that difficult to polish off the bottle! The best part is this delicious and refreshing wine costs less than $20! I’m all for a well-priced wine and this one delivers on flavour and price.
What to enjoy it with
Because of its light flavours, you could easily enjoy the Campbells of Rutherglen Trebbiano 2019 without food. It would go down oh so well before dinner, or alongside some light snacks. You really wouldn’t need to pair it with anything though – just a balmy summer afternoon.
However, because of its acidity and subtle palate, you could easily enjoy this wine with food too. After all, Italian wine is best enjoyed eating a delicious meal! If you’re not in the market for a good cheese or antipasto board, this wine will also go well with light meals. Think light fish or pasta dishes to pair with the lightness in the wine. Just remember to keep it simple, otherwise, you might overpower the wine!
