I’m so sorry I haven’t posted a food blog this week, I promise it is coming over the weekend! The public holiday totally threw out my schedule and so I didn’t have a chance to cook something delicious to share with you until later in the week. As payment though, I bring you, as always on a Friday it seems, another installment of Ella’s Wine Time. This is where I review a wine I’ve enjoyed in a way that makes sense to me, and hopefully gives you an idea of what a wine may be like without all the fancy wine talk. My partner has coined it: Unpretentious Wine Reviews, which I do actually like the sound of!
This week I was so upset with myself for not capturing some of the amazing wines I drank over the weekend in Melbourne. There was one in particular that I had at Chin Chin which was incredible, but alas I don’t remember the name of it! But luckily I had a wine on Wednesday night, paired with the Bachelorette, that really blew my socks off!
Not just any Pinot Noir
One of my friends introduced me to a wine called Nanny Goat from Central Otago. She absolutely loves it, and I can see why. It is so light and delicious, and all to drinkable if you ask me! But she found out the other day that they also have a wine called Super Nanny which someone suggested she must try.
The problem with this wine is that it is quite hard to find. For some reason, whether they don’t get enough stock or everyone buys it out, it is not available in many wine stores. So my friend hasn’t been able to find it for quite some time, meaning we’ve been wondering what this elusive Super Nanny is like for quite some time.
Thankfully the wait is over! She managed to secure a bottle and I was lucky enough that she wanted to share it with me while we watched the Bachelorette (definitely made for better viewing, I can tell you that). So we cracked it open as if it was some ancient relic and poured ourselves a glorious glass of this mysterious wine.
Why I loved it
First off, I love the name and the label. It differs itself a lot from the Nanny Goat style, and makes it feel more special. I think it also eludes to the heaviness in the wine. Although it is still a pretty classic and absolutely delicious pinot noir (for those that aren’t sure, these tend to be on the lighter side of reds which is usually reflected in their really light colour), it is a lot heavier than the regular Nanny Goat. You know it will be heavier as soon as you pour it given how dark the wine is in colour.
Despite being heavier, it hasn’t lost that beautiful lightness of the pinot. It really doesn’t linger which I actually quite liked, as the flavours were really complex first up but it didn’t make you pucker your lips (meaning it is light on the tannins). Even though some might not enjoy that, it was probably one of my favourite pinot noirs I’ve had in a long time.
Final verdict
This wine was rich without being too heavy, and light without being too light. Although it tasted fruity like a pinot, I also felt like the heaviness made this more subtle than some of the other pinots I’ve had, which I really enjoyed.
All in all, now that we’ve tried the elusive Super Nanny, I think I’m going to have trouble going back to regular Nanny Goat. I am so glad that after all the hype it wasn’t a disappointment, but I feel like surely the makers behind Nanny Goat would never let me down.
If you want to get your hands on a bottle, I’ve seen it is on the Vintage Cellars site. But if you don’t want to go there, I would try more boutique wine stores that have a smaller stock but that focus on different wines and smaller producers. You might have more luck getting your hands on this one!
