This week I thought I’d review something a little different. Usually I leave my reviews for wines that are a little fancy, a little bit different and special. But I think there is room as well for those wines that are perfect for a weeknight drink. Wines like this are still delicious, and inexpensive, but are not necessarily going to be one you bring out when you have friends around. I find these wines can sometimes be harder to find than others because there is plenty of information about more expensive wines, plus you can usually tell by the price if they’ll be good, but for those in the cheaper range it’s often difficult to know whether you’re going to get a decent wine or one that leaves you regretting not spending a few extra dollars.

Last week I really felt like a wine, and it was great that we had this one on hand because I didn’t feel the least bit guilty for cracking open the bottle. I actually won it in a Secret Santa (one of the stealing versions) and so I didn’t have to even pay a cent for it! It ranges in about the $20 mark, but unfortunately I can’t find an online store that stocks this vintage to link you to. But who doesn’t love a good decently priced wine, especially if you didn’t pay for it!

A decently priced Shiraz…oh my!

The wine I am reviewing is the Sunnycliff Estate Shiraz 2016. This wine is so drinkable I can’t even begin to explain it. It is full of delicious fruity flavours that my one glass of red turned into 2.5. I really thought I would be able to hold off and be good during the week, but I was so pleasantly surprised by this wine that I had to enjoy a little bit more. Because of the sweetness in the wine it doesn’t feel as peppery or heavy as a usual shiraz, and I think having a bit of age on its side definitely improves the flavours. I would recommend drinking it now though as it is delicious and fresh, whereas I think age will make it a lot heavier.

What to enjoy it with

This wine pairs perfectly with meat such as lamb or beef. We had it with neither of these as I had made a lentil bolognese, but it definitely made the meal feel like it was more meaty than what it was! I can tell you that it also pairs with lentils in a tomato sauce, in case you were wondering.

Final verdict

This wine is a great wine for those nights when you feel like having a glass without getting too fancy. It is perfect for weeknights, and doesn’t break the bank, whilst still being absolutely delicious. You don’t need to feel guilty about opening this bottle, although you might want to finish it off if you’re not careful!
