5 wines for Shiraz Day

by The Cheeky Vino

Today is Shiraz Day and I’m celebrating by sharing some great wines to inspire you. I mean any excuse for some good wine right? What I love about Shiraz as a variety is all the styles it can produce from different regions, vineyards, winemaking and ageing. Shiraz can be completely transformed depending on these, and so there really is so much to discover. We all know and love our Barossa Shiraz, but this Shiraz Day I challenge you to look beyond to other Aussie wine regions (not that I have anything against you Barossa I love you). So I decided to share 5 wines for Shiraz Day from regions other than the Barossa to help inspire you to step out and try something different.

Taltarni Heathcote Shiraz

I’m a massive fan of Taltarni, and their Heathcote Shiraz seriously delivers on flavour. This wine is perfect for those looking for a softer, cool climate Shiraz it’s elegant yet complex. Notes of plum, red berries and spice come together in a beautifully lengthy wine.

Mitchelton Wines Shiraz

Another Shiraz from Heathcote with a lovely depth of flavour and good ageing potential. Notes of raspberry, spice and seamlessly integrated oak. It’s youthful and vibrant with a really nice balance and length. I also love the label which showcases Gabriella’s Possom Nungurrayi works.

Scarborough Wines Shiraz

The Hunter Valley is well-known for Shiraz and it’s easy to see why with the Scarborough Wines 2018 Black Label Shiraz. It’s savoury and packed full of character with a long, rich palate. It has everything you want from a Hunter Valley Shiraz and more, with a few years of age already under its belt.

Soumah Syrah

It is technically the same thing, so why not enjoy a ‘Shiraz’ from the Yarra Valley? I wanted to include one wine that you might not expect. You’ll be rewarded with a lovely savoury palate alongside intense cherry and plum. This single vineyard Syrah is beautifully balanced, aromatic and refined.
